Farewell Miner

In 1994 my brother Geoff Mazzer and 10 other miners were underground in Moura Mine Number 2, when a massive gas explosion occurred. Due to the dangerous conditions, rescue crews could not go in, and the entrance to the mine was closed permanently leaving those eleven miners entombed forever.

Granny and the Snake

I don’t kill any animals if I can help it, but grew up at a time when the following rule was applied, ‘The only good snake was a dead one’. My Granny, Ivy Afflick, having been brought up in deadly Taipan Country on the Atherton Table Lands, was the toughest old bird I knew. The real lesson - leave them alone!

Mozzie Attack

The North Gregory Hotel Winton is a great pub, but stupid me left the doors open at the Outback Festival all night and woke up scratching. I wrote this poem for the Breakfast Show that day.

Pancakes

My daughter Sophie, when in grade 1, was asked by her Teacher to select a topic beginning with the letter 'P', and to do either a brief talk or demonstration on that subject. She chose Pancakes. For seven days we ate yummy pancakes. Each morning Sophie arose excitedly practising her technique. The energy and atmosphere she created, plus our appreciation for the daily feast, is captured in this poem.

Pay Day

Marco served almost a decade in the Queensland Police Force, attaining the rank of Detective Senior Constable before leaving. He was a naïve country lad, and begins this performance with a brief story of how he became a copper. Marco then performs 'Pay Day' a serious true crime story/poem in memory of a murder victim Earnest Norton Barnard 87 years of age, murdered in Innisfail, North Queensland.

Spaghetti Nose

My father was a very hard worker, and sometimes very stern. When he sat at the table to eat, we often waited to adjust to his various moods. One day as our family ate silently, Dad sneezed whilst eating a plate of Mum's finest spaghetti bolognaise. This poem in based on that story. We watched shocked at the results, but once Dad started laughing and pulling spaghetti out of his nostrils, the whole family lost it hysterically. What a memory.

The Big Great Dane

The Big Great Dane is based on a true story. Marco used to walk to Central State School in Warwick. A very large dog would rush at the fence barking as the children walked past. One morning the gate was open. Boy did Marco get to school quickly that day.

The Cheeky Frog

Marco loves Frogs. He can't believe some people find them gross to touch, or become frantic when a wet slimy Frog is near them. He wondered what a 'cheeky' frog might like to do to freak out unsuspecting Humans.

The Million Star Motel

I remember seeing my Dad, an Italian migrant who worked too hard and died too young, in the back yard of our small town avenue house, one night, staring up at the stars and obviously contemplating life. There is no better place to do it than in Australia, nestled in the arms of Mother Nature and tucked under the blanket of the Southern Cross; what a wonderful place to dream. Help preserve it, and take the time to experience her spirit.

Volunteers

The greatest Army mankind has ever created is our legion of volunteers that appear in times of despair. This is Marco's ode to Volunteers.
