Farewell Miner

They told me you were lost down in a smoky Moura mine.
They told me they were leaving you and all your mates behind.
But were you down there waiting, hanging on for help to come?
Were you praying with a mate that some miracle be done?
These questions are my nightmare, and as we pause to cry,
We ask God to convince us that these good men had to die.

Granny and the Snake

Old granny told me when I was just ten
That a snake’s about as dangerous, as half a dozen men.
So we lived by a golden rule back then,
That the only good snake was a dead one, friend!

Mozzie Attack

I’ve just come in from Winton where they’ve found the Dinosaur
And the water stinks of sulphur as it creeps up from the bore,
And the hotel room I slept in, though quite comfortable as sleep goes,
Became a bombing target for a squadron of mosquitoes.

 The Floater

I will admit when I hear SNAKE that I’m the first to pack it.
If someone spat out SHARK! I reckon I’d outswim Grant Hackett.
But of all the top ten warning shouts there’s one that woos the voter
Down at our local swimming pool and that’s the cry of ‘Floater’.

The Million Star Motel

When the road is long and lonely and the sunset’s far-off gaze
Steers the weary workers home again, then I, like all the strays
Look out on the far horizon for the traveller’s next motel,
Some with carpet soft as Spinifex and flash pink doors as well;
Rated by the stars I find them, but the slickest I must tell
Is my swag beneath the heavens in The Million Star Motel!

Childrens Poems

Pancakes

She runs to the Kitchen and begs begs begs
For milk and flour and eggs eggs eggs,

She stirs and whirs in a big fat bowl
Then into the pan where bless my soul,

The Cheeky Frog

There was a green frog that lived in a log,
And only came out when there was a fog,
When no-one could see him, and guess what he did?
He used to jump up on the garbage bin lid!

 The Big Great Dane

On the way to school one day
We had to go a special way,
And, as we walked down Pascoe Lane
We passed a dog — A BIG GREAT DANE.

Spaghetti Nose

Our family gathered most Sundays
For spaghetti and sweet bolognaise.
The juices flowed, the laughter grew,
We ate like kings and told lies too.
